Christmas 2007

I seem to have dropped out for a week or two. Not just Winter Blues and ankle tendonitis; but also coping with this seasons long, persistent virus -coughs and sneezes and all! So Christmas was as quiet as usual. Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and 6 of us sharing lunch on the Day. I get the main ingredients, others bring vegetables, fruit salad, brandy sauce- and another takes charge of the cooking (best present of all!) And while wqe were recovering from all this we watched a DVD of Babettes Feast. I'd seen this many years ago. Surprised how little I really remembered and how appropriate it suddenly seemed for Christmas- babettes Gift to this little community-
The Feast by Eugene Petersen
The milkful breasts brim blessings and quiet
The child into stillness, past pain: El Shaddai
Has done great things for me. Earth nurses
Heaven in the slopes of the Grand Tetons.
Grown up he gives breakfast, breaks bread,
Itinerant host at a million feasts,
His milkfed bones are buried unbroken
In the Aramathean's tomb.
The world has worked up an appetite:
And comes on the run to the table he set:
Strong meat, full-bodied wine.
Wassailing with my friends in the winter
Mountains, I'm back for seconds as often
As every week: drink long! drink up!
