When I went to get my hair cut last week I realised that Matthew has been trying to make something of my hair do for the last 26 years. We agreed a long time ago that there is no magic answer so he cuts it, but charges me less than the going rate because there isn't much to cut. I watched him sweep up after dealing with a young man's hair one day, but for me he didn't pick up the broom!
At one time he ran a busy salon but sold up and went for the quiet life prefering to work alone. In the early days I used to take Mum to the salon for her hairdo too.
And then there's Jimmy who's been looking after my cars since 1981. That was before he set up business himself. He and his friend were stock car champions; certainly he spent all his spare time working on or driving cars. I don't think his spare time is devoted to cars any more but he still fetches my car when necessary, services and MOTs it and returns it.
Then there's the GP, a colleague who also helped Mum and Dad when we came to live here; and the Dentist who still works on my teeth, even since he went private. (the charges didn't seem to make much difference and he's a good dentist!); his Dad fitted my parents with new Dentures back in 1982! Now I hear about his sons graduating from University.
Perhaps I'm loyal or I just don't like change; certainly there have been many changes since we moved here. The places Dad went for the messages- dairy, greengrocer, baker, butcher and fishmonger in Mayfield Rd have gone many years ago. Now there's a Barber, Chinese Takeaway, Fish 'n Chippery and recently I noticed an E'bay store. And along the back of the railway line. luxury flats all along.
Even here this year it has been change and 'upgrades'. My new drive in front will allow space for 2 visitors' cars outside ( if I get mine into the garage!) which will be handy when the parking restrictions reach us!
But there's still a few things unchanged- like the old apple tree which produced a bumper crop of small yellow apples this year which although a bit wrinkly now still taste g
ood! But the grape harvest of last year was not repeated this Autumn!

With new paths and no grass it is much easier to tidy up.
This bit is sort of Victorian Rockery but it was quickly dug around by Squirrel who enjoys my choice of crocus bulbs!
