The Kite Runner

One friend is good at noticing what's on or I might have missed this film, and I still had little idea what it was about till I got there but I am so glad I went to see it!
The story starts before the Russians arrive in Kabul and one is introduced to Kite flying and the fierce competition to cut the string of your opponents kites through the friendship of two boys, who, like David and Jonathan make a covenant of friendship and loyalty. One grows up in California and becomes an author while the other endures the Russian rule and then the Taliban. The author has to return to Taliban ruled Kabul --. There are indeed overtones of the story of David and Jonathan even to the effective use of a catapult, but there is also darker hint of Cain and Abel. Watching a woman stoned for adultery was-well horrifying though quicker than I had imagined-but I longed for someone to say 'whoever is without sin can throw the first stone'.
I've just started reading the book!
