The Wrong Kind of Snow

'Our collection of islands, sandwiched between an ocean and a continent, where nowhere is more than 100 miles from the sea, lies at a point where four competing air masses meet. This combination gives our weather two key characteristics- mildness and changeability. Bizarrely, together, they make the British Isles the most weather-affected place on earth.' (Woodward & Penn 2007)
Well that's nice to know! Yesterday, at 8am it looked wet and dull, at 9am the sun shone brilliantly at 10am it snowed, then the sun came really bright but changed to rain and a gale as I opened the door. At 11 am it was so dark I had the light on-and so it went on -sleet, rain and wind-a really bad day full of weather!
And across the country it was mayhem; a lorry blown over on the Forth bridge at 6 am as they were closing it to high vehicles; roads closed in the North traffic pile-ups; a Ferry aground off Blackpool with people being winch to safety in the dark in a high gale-- and to think that the forecast for Friday as given on Monday was a sunny day!
We are it is clear 'a people forever caught out by the rain (or the wrong kind of snow)'. But we also know how to appreciate a fine day!
